Embracing five European nations and 24.5 million people, the Nordic Region covers an area slightly larger than Texas plus California. Economic measurements reveal that this region's inhabitants enjoy a high standard of living. So do measurements of its policies for encouraging human development — for example: universal education and equal opportunities for women. Example: Among Nordic countries in 2002, about 60 percent of all women aged 15 and above were active members of the workforce.
