According to the Republic of Cyprus, the resident population south of the UN buffer zone includes: 642,100 Greek Cypriots, 500 Turkish Cypriots, and 72,500 citizens of other nations. Estimated residents north of the zone include: 86,900 Turkish Cypriots, 500 Greek Cypriots, 35,000 troops from Turkey, 118,000 other Turks who entered Cyprus illegally after Turkey invaded it in 1974, and 9,600 citizens of other nations. Despite losing access to 37 percent of the island in 1974, the Greek Cypriot area has a thriving economy.
